Tax questions about betting winnings
This page is general information and it is not tax advice. We do not state whether any amount you receive is taxable, at what rate, or whether it must be declared. Those questions depend on your own circumstances and must be put to a qualified tax adviser or lawyer in Somalia.
Why there is no rate on this page
Somalia has no published betting taxation framework. There is no operator turnover tax, no withholding at a locally licensed operator, and no official guidance written for a player. Any site that gives you a rate is guessing, and acting on a guess costs money. What follows is what to ask instead, and what to keep.
Questions worth putting to an adviser
- How is an amount received from outside Somalia treated for my personal tax position, if at all.
- Does the source of that amount change the answer, and do I have a duty to disclose the source.
- Are there reporting duties attached to receiving foreign currency or crypto into a wallet or account I control.
- If I trade crypto as part of moving funds, does that step create a separate treatment.
- What records should I keep, for how long, and in what form.
- How does the legal position on gambling in Somalia interact with any answer you give me.
Records to keep either way
- Dates and amounts of deposits and withdrawals, in USD.
- Exchanger receipts for every conversion step, both directions.
- Wallet addresses and transaction identifiers for crypto movements.
- Operator account statements exported before an account is ever closed.
- Any correspondence with an operator about a held or reviewed payment.
What operators do and do not do
An offshore operator is not going to file anything for you, and it is not going to withhold anything against a Somali liability. Its own reporting duties run to the authority that licensed it, not to Somalia. Treat your records as the only reliable account of what happened, because the operator may close or restrict access at any time.
Before the tax question comes up at all
A payment touching betting can be held at the bank or mobile money layer rather than at the operator. That makes getting the money out the first problem and tax the second one. Keep the records listed above from your first deposit, because an adviser cannot work from memory.
Important. 18 plus only. Nothing on this page is tax, legal or financial advice. Speak to a qualified adviser about your own circumstances.
Questions readers ask
Are betting winnings taxable in Somalia
No published framework covers it, so no honest answer exists on a comparison site. Your position depends on your own circumstances. Ask a qualified tax adviser in Somalia.
Will the operator deduct tax before paying me
An offshore operator applies the rules of the jurisdiction that licensed it. Do not assume any deduction has been made on your behalf, and do not assume one has not.
Does using crypto change anything
It can, because a conversion step may be treated separately from the underlying activity. That is exactly the kind of question to put to an adviser rather than to a comparison site.
What if I keep no records
You lose the ability to explain your own transactions later, to an adviser or to anyone else. Keep them from the first deposit.
